Laurel is located in Custer Country in Southeastern Montana and is 15 minutes from Billings. The surrounding area is home to the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range, the first nationally designated area established to provide a home for free roaming wild horses. Today, approximately 120 wild horses roam the rugged expanses of the Pryor Mountains along with bands of bighorn sheep, mule deer, and other wildlife.
Also of special interest is that Riverside Park, located south of the Yellowstone River bridge, was the site of the German Prisoner of War Camp during World War II. The prisoners built the buildings located in the park. Camping is available in the park and the facility offers showers, water, electricity hook-ups, tent spaces, horseshoe pits, and picnic areas for a minimal fee.
